BURNSIDE — Getting students to think like millionaires year-round is one Bronzeville woman’s goal, which is why she’s expanding her financial literacy after-school program into the summer.
Registration for the summer camp will close at the end of March. The camp will run from June 23-Aug. 23 at Chicago State University, 9501 S. King Drive, from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. It’s for kids in kindergarten through eighth grade. Register here.
X’ernona Woods first brought Kid Millionaire to Harold Washington Elementary School in Burnside in 2015. She has since added her program to Paul Revere Elementary School, 1010 E. 72nd St.
Woods is the author of “Save that Penny for a Sunny Day.” She created a wealth-building kit that comes with her book, a workbook and lesson plans. Some of the other items included are financial literacy plays, classroom activity books, mock credit cards and checks and more.
What do you think?
In the after-school program, she teaches financial literacy to students of all ages. They’re taught the importance of saving money, learn about investing in stocks, and concepts such as liabilities and assets, and profits and losses.
Woods targets students so they can build good financial habits early and become “financially healthy.”
This summer students will play money bingo and stock investment games.
They will do more than learn about finances, but they will also practice test taking skills, learn a new language, go on weekly trips, do yoga and workout.
“I am very excited,” Woods said. “I see the lessons already being utilized. They are holding on to their money for a longer period of time since I’ve been teaching them about delayed gratification.”
The highlight of the summer will be the business and pitch competition, Woods said. There will be a panel of business owners and bankers who will review the students’ business plan. They will learn how to do that through lessons in her book.
Participants will receive a “swag bag” full of goodies and the materials they need to learn. Each student will get a “wealth specialist” card to show when they complete a level. Parents can attend a monthly class for free once their child is registered, Woods said. There will be a rides through what Woods is calling the “Kid Millionaire Chauffeur Services.”
